Supporting Learners Beyond the Classroom

As schools approach the end of term, attention often shifts toward examinations, reports, and holiday plans. Yet for many learners, emotional wellbeing remains just as important as academic performance.

Over the course of the term, several learner support initiatives were conducted to provide emotional guidance, strengthen leadership skills, and encourage healthy academic habits. These sessions created opportunities for learners to feel heard, supported, and equipped for both school and life.

Individual Student Support

Some learners required personalized support to navigate emotional challenges affecting their wellbeing and learning.

Counselling support was provided to pupils experiencing emotional distress, including challenges such as separation anxiety and adjustment difficulties. These interventions focused on helping learners identify and express their feelings while developing healthy coping strategies.

Support was strengthened through ongoing collaboration with teachers and parents, ensuring that learners received consistent guidance both at school and at home.

When children feel emotionally safe, they are better able to learn, connect, and grow.

Helping Young Learners Make Good Choices

Group sessions were conducted with Nursery learners to help them prepare for the holiday period.

The discussions focused on understanding the difference between good choices and not-so-good choices. Through age-appropriate conversations and activities, learners reflected on how their decisions affect themselves and those around them.

The goal was not simply to teach rules, but to encourage self-awareness and responsibility in everyday situations.

Building Leadership Through Kindness and Empathy

Student leaders participated in a leadership development session designed to strengthen both leadership capacity and emotional intelligence.

The session explored:

  • Leadership skills and responsibility
  • Kindness and empathy
  • Active listening
  • Pausing before reacting

Learners discussed how effective leadership is not about authority alone but about understanding others, managing emotions, and creating positive relationships.

By encouraging reflection and self-awareness, student leaders were challenged to model the values they hope to see in their peers.

Preparing Primary Seven Candidates for Success

As part of the term closure activities, a dedicated session was conducted with Primary Seven candidates to support early examination preparation and positive mindset development.

The objective was to help learners understand that success is built gradually and that preparation should begin long before the final term.

Learners explored the role of each school term in the learning journey:

  • Term One: Building a strong foundation
  • Term Two: Strengthening understanding
  • Term Three: Polishing knowledge and revision

Through guided reflection exercises, learners were encouraged to:

  • Visualize the results they hope to achieve
  • Reflect on their future aspirations
  • Connect present effort with future outcomes

The emphasis throughout the session was on personal responsibility, consistency, and the importance of starting early rather than waiting until examination season.

What Learners Shared

One of the most valuable aspects of the session was the opportunity for learners to openly share their experiences.

The discussions were highly interactive, with learners actively participating and engaging throughout. Feedback at the end of the session was overwhelmingly positive, with ratings ranging from 7/10 to 9/10.

Several important themes emerged:

  • A desire for more structured revision time
  • Feelings of being overwhelmed by continuous homework
  • The need for a healthier balance between academics, rest, and play
  • Concerns about harsh teaching approaches in some situations
  • Appreciation for teachers who are supportive, encouraging, and understanding

Many learners also expressed that the session gave them a sense of relief. They appreciated having a safe space where their concerns could be voiced and acknowledged without judgment.

A Valuable Reminder

The experience reinforced an important lesson: academic preparation and emotional wellbeing cannot be separated.

When learners feel heard, supported, and understood, they are better positioned to engage with their studies, manage challenges, and pursue their goals with confidence.

Schools play a vital role not only in developing academic competence but also in creating environments where children feel emotionally safe and valued.

As educators, parents, and caregivers, our responsibility extends beyond helping children achieve good grades. It includes helping them build resilience, self-awareness, and the confidence to navigate life’s challenges.

Because when we support the whole child, learning becomes more meaningful, sustainable, and successful.
